I. 임상시험이란 무엇인가?
 1. 개론

*용어의 정의
임상시험(Clinical Trials/clinical investigation / clinical study)이란 의약품 등의 안전성과유효성을 증명하기 위하여 사람을 대상으로 해당 약물의 약동.약력.약리.임상적 효과를 확인하고 이상반응을 조사하는 시험(생물학적 동등성 시험을 포함한다)을 말한다.

[약사법]제2조(정의)
Any investigation in human subjects intended to discover or verify the clinical, pharmacological and/or other pharmacodynamic effects of one of more investigational medicinal product(s), and/or to identify any adverse reactions to one or more investigational medicinal product(s), and/or to study absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of one of more investigational medicinal product(s) with the object of ascertaining its (their) safety and/or efficacy.

*임상시험의 역사와 규정의 발전
❖1747년 린드(James Lind,영국)의 괴혈병 실험
→ 인류 최초의 체계적 임상시험, 5월20일 세계 임상시험의 날 지정
-영국 해군의 군의관 린드가 시행, 12명의 병사를 대상으로 실시
-괴혈병 치료에 레몬이 효과가 있음을 증명

❖1937년 설파닐아미드 엘릭서(Sulfanilamide Elixir)사건
→미 식품의약품 화장품법(Food Drug and Cosmetic Act)통과,
- NDA(New Drug Application:신약 허가 심사)시초,신약에 대한 판매 전 승인 요구
- Diethylene glycol (독성이 강한 부동액 주요 성분)용매로 이용한 액상 감염 치료제 판매, 107명 소아 사망
